ROLE — SECURITY PATROL 🔦
SECURITY PATROL
welcome, crewmate shu.
Early in the day on TUESDAY, Shu will hear the familiar ping of the I.R.I.S. at his wrist; the moment that he lifts up his hand to check what the noise is for, a window immediately pops up. The projection fills in a spread of blue, and a message sent only to his designation loads in the window.
I have something of a job for you. Pick a location to set up an off-network camera, to catch anything in the area; if the system is going to pull a stunt on us again, we can certainly work smarter, not harder.
If it does, meet me in the morning after the lockdown ends. I've updated some of your credentials so you should be able to get up before anyone else. We can go get the camera, maybe squeeze in a second location before we have to lock down everything and everyone's awake.

ADRASTEA
Come FRIDAY, early in the morning, a message notification sounds again. It's loud enough that it rouses him from a very groggy sleep before anyone else. No one else even twitches at the sound or the blue light, and there's nobody in the halls the moment Shu steps outside, so might as well head to the location that pops up - right?
It indicates where Shu needs to go to meet Adrastea. The walk there is eerie, and lit only by the emergency lights of the ship - a sickly, golden orange in a strip that barely brightens the dark corners. The senior officer can be found easily there, spinning something almost absently around one finger, the other hand cupping their elbow. Once Shu is close enough, they stop spinning the item in their possession and instead toss it at him for him to catch.
It's a flashlight, one with a strap on the end. Huh. Pretty useful, considering the darkness that surrounds them.
Adrastea taps a flashlight of their own against their shoulder, something serious but enigmatic in their filtered voice as their helmet remains blank, only a faint, cool blue glow just barely visible from within. "Let's go."

RULES
As the role responsible for security patrols, along with the information that is acquired on patrol, Shu is expected to follow a few rules:
1. For now, keep your new designation a secret. Should this designation be shared with anyone without prior authorization, consequences and termination of position are possible. This can be revisited at a later date.
↳ As of w2, you can share your role with ONE non-role person.
2. You may use your knowledge during trial to guide, suggest, or prioritize investigations. If you otherwise distribute any information acquired, it must be done anonymously or without referencing the true source. This can be revisited at a later date.
3. Each week, Security Patrol can do the following:
📹 A. one location can be chosen on Tuesday; this location is where the role can place a video camera, completely separate from the Eudora's system, which is tamperproof and will remain hidden until retrieved.
↳ As of w3, you can place TWO cameras in separate locations.
🔎 B. a second location can be chosen Friday, with two chances to pick again if your choice doesn't get a hit; this is the location which can be investigated before the curfew lockdown is lifted and crime scenes are marked restricted areas prior to being locked down.
Currently, junior crew capsules require a valid explanation as to why you want to check or monitor them, and senior crew capsules are off limits. Anywhere else that has been unlocked on the Eudora is fair game.
4. While patrolling on Friday before lockdown lifts, 1 piece of evidence can be retrieved from the location that you visit. Choose wisely.
↳ As of w3, there is a chance to increase this to TWO pieces of evidence depending on the investigation.
☠️ If Security Patrol finds a dead body, this does not count towards the pieces of evidence that can be retrieved, regardless of whether it's physically located or found in their video log. Adrastea will ensure that the body is brought to trial first thing to give the crew a head start.
5. Once you have completed your patrol, you can choose whether to share the recording (if there is one) anonymously on the public network. If you share it privately, the source of it cannot be revealed at this time.

TALK TO ADRASTEA
adrastea is sat... perched on the bar itself in titan's call, the music playing a little bit different from the playlist that thebe usually has playing when no one's changed the jukebox. the holo-singer is off duty, currently, whatever that means.
next to them on the bar counter is a funky little camera. ]
no subject
Expecting another camera shutdown if this happens again, then?
[ off network… sounds like something they’d do back home if they ran into a problem like this. ]
no subject
Better safe than sorry. This hunk of junk is under repairs for the turbulence we went through, so I'm going to see if the local garage can't look into the problems we've had while they're at it, but I'm not the kind of person to rely only on optimism.
I don't really think you are, either.
no subject
Not really, no. You mind if I smoke?
[ because he could really do with a smoke. remember when he was quitting? fun times. ] And then talk me through how your plan’s gonna work with a bit more detail. A camera check and potentially in person investigation before everyone wakes up if something did go wrong?
no subject
I'll live vicariously through you.
[ implying they would smoke if not for helmet purposes, probably. "the NPCs drink and eat through their helmets" this is different. ]
That's the gist. We're working outside of the system, which is outside of proper protocol. I've violated a lot of rules in my contract - and, technically, yours - to do this, but I wrote in that you're just very interested in the intelligence department and are shadowing me on the job. So keep it to yourself for now while we figure out what's going on, that way we don't get slapped for it and the authorizations I've given you aren't revoked.
no subject
I’ll keep one for you, if you ever feel like taking that thing off.
[ smoking buddies. ]
You might’ve noticed, I don’t tend to share a lot. [ dryly. ] Sounds like you expect a repeat of last week. Maybe not as violent, but something at least.
no subject
[ not w1. you know how these things go. ]
Call it... [ a pause, considering their words as they tap a finger along to the calm, jazzy beat against the counter. ] Being cautious. With the way things have been, I'm not going to just sit around and wait. If nothing happens - then we're overprepared and maybe get a stupid video to maybe embarrass someone on the ship later.
If something does happen, maybe it'll help us understand what in the hell is going on here. Not a lot of things have gone right so far.
no subject
[ it is out there for future weeks. groundwork set. ]
Or maybe we catch someone messing with the controls and that’s why the override didn’t work. Win/win. [ … ] And no kidding. Not even the barriers are behaving now, huh?
[ he leans back a little on the stool, taking a drag of the cigarette as he runs through some possibilities in his mind. ] Might be worth having an eye on one of the newer locations. We’ll be back on the ship on Thursday, right? Ahead of moving on to the next location. Chances are people will congregate in one of those areas.
[ … ] Or the observation deck. [ because wow, that was popular. ]
no subject
[ but they swipe up from their wrist to pull up a requisition form, filling it out for a couple packs of cigarettes for him under their callsign and his name. ]
If we find someone playing games with the controls, I'll string them up myself. What comes afer will depend on what they've been up to. [ cool as a cucumber, but the energy here is murder. ] The barriers are usually serious emergency protocol only, whether they're the fire resistant ones or what went up over the stasis bay entrance, but they are supposed to respond to my passcodes.
[ as they finish the requisition form, they move to rest their elbow on their raised thigh, chin propped in their hand, looking down at him. ]
You will be, yes. We take off Thursday night for our next location, so there'll actually be a scheduled jump that shouldn't put things into a complete spiral - we'll actually know about it in advance, and ideally the systems stay up. [ doubt but the ideal ] You also won't want to stick around too much planetside during the pre-boarding. The locals are going to be a bit... mm, wilder, supposedly, after the eclipse coming up.
[ they do nod, though. ]
Somewhere new or heavily trafficked doesn't sound like a bad idea, though. I think nearly half of you were in the observation lounge last week.
no subject
They didn’t respond to anything on Sunday. So, something higher than you guys is overriding your access. [ concerning. ] To… stop us from finding Scien’s body too soon? It would’ve started rotting by now. If the aim was hiding it, it’d have to be someone who could physically access the holding cells to remove it.
But Eunhyuk and Sheba were still able to get to him either way. [ ugh.
there’s a pause at the next part where he just pauses his thinking, and smoking, to look at adrastea just… like… why? why this. ]
A little wilder. By how much, exactly?
no subject
I'm wondering if there's not something built into the ship or the systems. [ rueful, unhappy, tapping their fingers against their helmet's cheek area as the glow looks down at him still. ] We've taken a closer look at the nanites, as best we can with what we have, with Io looking into what happened to Pearce, and it can't be them. I was worried that it was, but they really are just invasive background noise.
[ ... ] I don't understand why it was Lee and Sheba that were allowed in. Who would have authorized that, who would have chosen them, why... not having answers for any of this, it won't sit right with me until we get something.
[ the glow in their helmet blinks at his "why" look, and adrastea shrugs a shoulder. it's not emotion share but there's a Vibe here that's kind of amused. ]
Blood orgies, apparently. We'll be sending out an alert for both the jump and the locals.
no subject
[ because… SOMETHING HAPPENED HERE. mysteries. ]
It doesn’t align with not wanting the body found, but like you said — why them? Did they just assign access randomly?
[ there are so many questions. aaa. ]
… Blood orgies. [ … ] Don’t know what I expected.
[ he really did not know. ]
I don’t know whether people might avoid the deck after last week. Bad memories, especially with what happened to Luke and then every person who died this weekend having been there before we all passed out. I was thinking about setting up a camera either in the strip mall area, the omegamart or the food court. One of those three, given they’re new and people will likely end up at any of them for either clean clothes, or non-mess hall food.
no subject
[ slowly... slowly working through questions. the life of having a role and also it being w1. ]
... maybe the body was meant to be found, not hidden. You wouldn't just leave it in a brig cell if you didn't want it to be seen, would you? You and I both know the best way to hide a body is to just outright get rid of it. Throw it out the airlock if you have the systems under your control.
[ a bit more humor radiates from them, before it sobers and they hum a thoughtful, synthetic noise. ]
Might move to the rec room instead of the lounge. We took some couches and chairs from there to move to the lounge for more comfortable seating, especially since the rec room was closed off. [ so. they know there's decent space there. ] I would lean towards the food court, maybe, but mostly because if a stay in place order is given I'd rather be comfortable.
no subject
There's plenty of ways to hide or get rid of a corpse in plain sight, yeah. If they meant it to be found, that meant finding everything that was there. That he tore his own heart out and crushed it. That he was speaking to someone. [ ... ] Ugh. If they wanted something from it, they were obscure enough about it that we can't figure it out just yet.
[ throws scien out the airlock just to feel better (no) ]
Yeah, and I'm not sure I want to put the camera somewhere where it's more likely people would start if they woke up during the night. Dahut wasn't killed in the observation deck, so... [ he tilts his head. ] Assuming that's a popular place to settle on Thursday -- I might go there myself, for the record -- then...
Food court or Omegamart'll do. If we have the chance on Friday, we could always check whichever of the two I don't put a camera in.
no subject
Becomes a question of who the someone was, or if it was a... royal we sort of situation, so to speak. The audience. Because I sure as hell didn't have that video pop up on my security feeds, and it's not recorded anywhere else in the system. [ tap... tap... tap... ] But that's what the camera will hopefully be for. So that they can't obscure themselves. I'm going to see if I can't get my hands on more of them that won't be detectable by the ship.
[ nyyeh ]
I'll likely stay in the security room again, the same as I had last week. Some attempt to keep an eye on things, and override where I can if need be. But I'm sure that a number of the officers will be out and about like they were Thursday. You might run into one of them. [ thoughtful ] Sounds like a plan to me. We'll have about two hours before everyone else wakes up, if we're incapacitated again, so we'll see what we can find.
no subject
Just start your own system? But if you have to hook it up to the electronics here and there isn’t a legitimate reason — like the one you’ve cooked up for this whole scenario — isn’t it gonna be pretty obvious someone’s up to something? Unless you have [ what’s it. ] those protections to stop outsiders getting into your systems. Firewalls?
[ me remembering once more how i was gonna place the tech guy but life Got Me. ]
… [ he shrugs. ] Are they in on all this too? If so, you could send someone you trust where I’m going if an extra set of eyes helps. Otherwise, I’ll just keep a note of who shows up in the same place I do.
[ senior staff in the wild, what will they do? ] Alright. Although, who knows. Maybe this is all paranoia and over planning on our part. [ he is not optimistic enough to believe that. ]
no subject
Mm, that's why it's probably going to be a slow process. [ annoyance about that ] I have to figure out what precautions can be taken to ensure it's just you and me for now. I haven't risked telling the other seven, not yet, but they'll already be on the lookout for things. You can probably fish them for information if you find yourself in the same places.
It's not that I think they're responsible for this, mind you, but more that it's easier to stay off the grid if fewer people know for now.
[ they reach out and tap on the counter, to summon up drinks for the both of them even if they're technically on the clock. ]
Wouldn't that be wonderful, O'Keefe.
no subject
Fair enough. The smaller an operation, the less people there are to screw it over.
[ he'll keep his ear to the ground and see if anyone slips up with some information they shouldn't know. but-- oh. drinks. he's not gonna argue with some work drinking.
he'll lift his glass for them to clinky clink. cheers. ]
Wonderful. Unlikely. Similar words.
no subject
Exactly. I've worked with them long enough to know the way they think, and while they'd take it seriously... well, I prefer working on my own when it comes to the things that really matter.
[ no one to mess it up if it's just you doing the job!
they clinky clink, getting one of the skinny stirrer straws so they can drink. ]
Very similar. Might actually be listed as synonyms in the dictionary, actually.
no subject
Too many cooks otherwise.
[ clink clink. ]
So, we expect some kind of bullshit, we're just not sure if it's going to benign or a repeat of this last weekend. That's the assumption we're working with right now.
no subject
Too many cooks. We already have enough of them.
[ dryly, but they go quiet as they consider that, taking a drink. ]
That is probably the safest assumption to be making, yes. And I'd rather be overprepared than underprepared as we have so woefully been thus far.
no subject
...
What are you going to do if access is blocked at other points again? Figure out another way around the block?
no subject
We have to keep moving forward, even if the path is a more unconventional one. I won't stop until we figure out what's happening here or die trying. And that risk is worth it to me.
no subject
… [ hmmm. ] Extreme. But thorough. [ sips his drink. ] If I die, I die, that’s just how it is. If this does turn into something that isn’t a one off, or it does get that dangerous, you should probably keep someone in mind to take over if I do.
no subject
[ considering what they've managed to glean about his life from the profile and just having spent this much time with him so far. ]
But I'll keep it in mind. And if something happens to me, you keep going. Reach out to one of the other officers if you need to.
