ROLE — SECURITY PATROL 🔦

SECURITY PATROL
welcome, crewmate shu.
Early in the day on TUESDAY, Shu will hear the familiar ping of the I.R.I.S. at his wrist; the moment that he lifts up his hand to check what the noise is for, a window immediately pops up. The projection fills in a spread of blue, and a message sent only to his designation loads in the window.
I have something of a job for you. Pick a location to set up an off-network camera, to catch anything in the area; if the system is going to pull a stunt on us again, we can certainly work smarter, not harder.

If it does, meet me in the morning after the lockdown ends. I've updated some of your credentials so you should be able to get up before anyone else. We can go get the camera, maybe squeeze in a second location before we have to lock down everything and everyone's awake.

ADRASTEA
Come FRIDAY, early in the morning, a message notification sounds again. It's loud enough that it rouses him from a very groggy sleep before anyone else. No one else even twitches at the sound or the blue light, and there's nobody in the halls the moment Shu steps outside, so might as well head to the location that pops up - right?

It indicates where Shu needs to go to meet Adrastea. The walk there is eerie, and lit only by the emergency lights of the ship - a sickly, golden orange in a strip that barely brightens the dark corners. The senior officer can be found easily there, spinning something almost absently around one finger, the other hand cupping their elbow. Once Shu is close enough, they stop spinning the item in their possession and instead toss it at him for him to catch.

It's a flashlight, one with a strap on the end. Huh. Pretty useful, considering the darkness that surrounds them.

Adrastea taps a flashlight of their own against their shoulder, something serious but enigmatic in their filtered voice as their helmet remains blank, only a faint, cool blue glow just barely visible from within. "Let's go."

RULES
As the role responsible for security patrols, along with the information that is acquired on patrol, Shu is expected to follow a few rules:

1. For now, keep your new designation a secret. Should this designation be shared with anyone without prior authorization, consequences and termination of position are possible. This can be revisited at a later date.
↳ As of w2, you can share your role with ONE non-role person.

2. You may use your knowledge during trial to guide, suggest, or prioritize investigations. If you otherwise distribute any information acquired, it must be done anonymously or without referencing the true source. This can be revisited at a later date.

3. Each week, Security Patrol can do the following:
📹 A. one location can be chosen on Tuesday; this location is where the role can place a video camera, completely separate from the Eudora's system, which is tamperproof and will remain hidden until retrieved.
↳ As of w3, you can place TWO cameras in separate locations.

🔎 B. a second location can be chosen Friday, with two chances to pick again if your choice doesn't get a hit; this is the location which can be investigated before the curfew lockdown is lifted and crime scenes are marked restricted areas prior to being locked down.
Currently, junior crew capsules require a valid explanation as to why you want to check or monitor them, and senior crew capsules are off limits. Anywhere else that has been unlocked on the Eudora is fair game.

4. While patrolling on Friday before lockdown lifts, 1 piece of evidence can be retrieved from the location that you visit. Choose wisely.
↳ As of w3, there is a chance to increase this to TWO pieces of evidence depending on the investigation.

☠️ If Security Patrol finds a dead body, this does not count towards the pieces of evidence that can be retrieved, regardless of whether it's physically located or found in their video log. Adrastea will ensure that the body is brought to trial first thing to give the crew a head start.

5. Once you have completed your patrol, you can choose whether to share the recording (if there is one) anonymously on the public network. If you share it privately, the source of it cannot be revealed at this time.

[ shu ‘hmms’ slightly under his breath, before digging in his pocket for his cigarettes. ]

Not really, no. You mind if I smoke?

[ because he could really do with a smoke. remember when he was quitting? fun times. ] And then talk me through how your plan’s gonna work with a bit more detail. A camera check and potentially in person investigation before everyone wakes up if something did go wrong?

[ he just immediately lights one. yay nicotine. ]

I’ll keep one for you, if you ever feel like taking that thing off.

[ smoking buddies. ]

You might’ve noticed, I don’t tend to share a lot. [ dryly. ] Sounds like you expect a repeat of last week. Maybe not as violent, but something at least.

I’ll probably need to. I’m smoking more than I want to.

[ it is out there for future weeks. groundwork set. ]

Or maybe we catch someone messing with the controls and that’s why the override didn’t work. Win/win. [ … ] And no kidding. Not even the barriers are behaving now, huh?

[ he leans back a little on the stool, taking a drag of the cigarette as he runs through some possibilities in his mind. ] Might be worth having an eye on one of the newer locations. We’ll be back on the ship on Thursday, right? Ahead of moving on to the next location. Chances are people will congregate in one of those areas.

[ … ] Or the observation deck. [ because wow, that was popular. ]

[ 🙏 thank you for endorsing his horrible habits, yelan. ]

They didn’t respond to anything on Sunday. So, something higher than you guys is overriding your access. [ concerning. ] To… stop us from finding Scien’s body too soon? It would’ve started rotting by now. If the aim was hiding it, it’d have to be someone who could physically access the holding cells to remove it.

But Eunhyuk and Sheba were still able to get to him either way. [ ugh.

there’s a pause at the next part where he just pauses his thinking, and smoking, to look at adrastea just… like… why? why this. ]

A little wilder. By how much, exactly?

It can’t? There’s no possibility of someone controlling the nanites, rather than the nanites going rogue?

[ because… SOMETHING HAPPENED HERE. mysteries. ]

It doesn’t align with not wanting the body found, but like you said — why them? Did they just assign access randomly?

[ there are so many questions. aaa. ]

… Blood orgies. [ … ] Don’t know what I expected.

[ he really did not know. ]

I don’t know whether people might avoid the deck after last week. Bad memories, especially with what happened to Luke and then every person who died this weekend having been there before we all passed out. I was thinking about setting up a camera either in the strip mall area, the omegamart or the food court. One of those three, given they’re new and people will likely end up at any of them for either clean clothes, or non-mess hall food.

Vibing... somehow makes them seem more ominous. [ just vibing. in their blood. yeaaaah. ]

There's plenty of ways to hide or get rid of a corpse in plain sight, yeah. If they meant it to be found, that meant finding everything that was there. That he tore his own heart out and crushed it. That he was speaking to someone. [ ... ] Ugh. If they wanted something from it, they were obscure enough about it that we can't figure it out just yet.

[ throws scien out the airlock just to feel better (no) ]

Yeah, and I'm not sure I want to put the camera somewhere where it's more likely people would start if they woke up during the night. Dahut wasn't killed in the observation deck, so... [ he tilts his head. ] Assuming that's a popular place to settle on Thursday -- I might go there myself, for the record -- then...

Food court or Omegamart'll do. If we have the chance on Friday, we could always check whichever of the two I don't put a camera in.

[ pointing at the ship. you did this. ]

Just start your own system? But if you have to hook it up to the electronics here and there isn’t a legitimate reason — like the one you’ve cooked up for this whole scenario — isn’t it gonna be pretty obvious someone’s up to something? Unless you have [ what’s it. ] those protections to stop outsiders getting into your systems. Firewalls?

[ me remembering once more how i was gonna place the tech guy but life Got Me. ]

[ he shrugs. ] Are they in on all this too? If so, you could send someone you trust where I’m going if an extra set of eyes helps. Otherwise, I’ll just keep a note of who shows up in the same place I do.

[ senior staff in the wild, what will they do? ] Alright. Although, who knows. Maybe this is all paranoia and over planning on our part. [ he is not optimistic enough to believe that. ]

[ scarecrow just climbing a wall trying to figure out what the tech is doin' ]

Fair enough. The smaller an operation, the less people there are to screw it over.

[ he'll keep his ear to the ground and see if anyone slips up with some information they shouldn't know. but-- oh. drinks. he's not gonna argue with some work drinking.

he'll lift his glass for them to clinky clink. cheers. ]

Wonderful. Unlikely. Similar words.

[ stop let him live there. ]

Too many cooks otherwise.

[ clink clink. ]

So, we expect some kind of bullshit, we're just not sure if it's going to benign or a repeat of this last weekend. That's the assumption we're working with right now.

[ scarecrow has rights. ]

...

What are you going to do if access is blocked at other points again? Figure out another way around the block?

[ he’d probably fall anyway. ]

[ hmmm. ] Extreme. But thorough. [ sips his drink. ] If I die, I die, that’s just how it is. If this does turn into something that isn’t a one off, or it does get that dangerous, you should probably keep someone in mind to take over if I do.

If it happens, it happens. I'm not going to go looking for it.

[ unfortunately, he is just like this. ]

Who do you trust the most, out of all the others?
