Hm... I can't say for sure about them watching over the living—though I'd certainly like to think so, in some cases—but I do have some experience with the afterlife. So, the idea of souls lingering after death isn't new to me, at least.
Well, it's mostly experience with souls who couldn't pass on after death and ended up trapped in Hell, so... mostly the unpleasant kind. Lingering regrets, and all that.

Not exactly my specialty, but I have a friend who helps out what souls they can. They're the one who can go between Hell and the world of the living at will—I can really only go to Hell with their assistance, or under special circumstances.
