... Yes, he was. The Pontiff is the head of the Order of the Sacred Flame. And the position of Inquisitor was established by the Pontiff as an investigative body that worked directly for him.
I see Sacred Flame sounds like it does a lot of work Interesting... I met an inquisitor once. She asked me about trolleys and fat men and daughters. Don't know if she liked my answers very much.
You're the second person to tell me that. Though, the inquisitors of the other person's world were far different than myself. An entire organization of them, as opposed to merely one.
The question asking, though - that is the nature of my job. I'm not sure what a trolley is. As for the rest, it sounds as if you were being interrogated...? Were you in trouble, Io?
I see. ...Unfortunately, that is not uncommon behavior. I believe Gregor's inquisition was quite similar - but for us, such is not the case. Rather, it is a different institution entirely that prefers to sweep information or scapegoat. I choose otherwise. All I have ever sought as the Inquisitor, and my predecessor before me, is the truth.
I'm sorry that you had to deal with something like that, Io.
Well. In my experience, I can think of several fat rich men who would deserve it.
[ that is not a holy thing to say ]
As for what brings someone to it: I was chosen to be the Inquisitor by the Pontiff himself. However, I have been training for it since I was very young. It requires memorizing the histories and scripture of the Church ad nauseam, among other things.

Don't have much in me.
You are indeed far more heavensward than most think a person can get.
This Pontiff's someone you work with?

... Yes, he was.

Ours was just the one. Sent to our home.
Trolleys - they're like carriages but on rails
They take people from place to place quite fast
Usually in a city.
And no, I was not in trouble so to speak.
I was just the easiest to blame.

I see.

There are worse things than Inquisitors asking
if you'd push a fat man onto some tracks to save children from a runaway trolley.
Thinking about it now gives me a headache
What brings someone to decide to be an inquisitor?
The truth and only the truth?

Exactly.
Ah, so a whole lot of study prior to...
Would make sense for someone whose task it is to ask the critical questions.
Quite the responsibility you hold then.

To some.
To others, I am merely the hound of the Pontiff, barking and biting to his command.
no subject
Or something else?
no subject
Nothing more than that.
You'll find I don't particularly believe in following orders blindly as the title insinuates.
