ROLE — NAVIGATOR 🧭
NAVIGATOR
welcome, crewmate SHOMA ENDA.
On SUNDAY, once the unfortunate procedures of ... "Execution" has gone over, Shoma will hear the familiar ping of the I.R.I.S. at his wrist; the moment that he lifts up his hand to check what the noise is for, a window immediately pops up. The projection fills in a spread of maroon, and a message sent only to their designation loads in the window.
There is no compulsion to obey the request, but it is an extension of knowledge, and curiosity - and could be interesting.

Shoma Enda,
Unfortunate and ill timing given what's just happened, but mayhaps this invitation can provide some insight into what's to come with these upcoming weeks. I wish I could have done this at a better time but it is a decision that must be made before our next travel destination.
Meet me here as soon as possible and I'll be sure to explain more thoroughly.

METIS
A location pops up on the I.R.I.S. once the message is read, and will indicate where Shoma needs to go to meet with Metis. It will lead to a command room in which only the Senior Crew is allowed access, and an important factor when it comes to navigation. When he gets there, he'll find the COS waiting patiently, observing a line of data and routes illuminated on a panel above the main control that vanishes once they spot Shoma. A brief ! displays on the visor of their helmet before they lead them towards a table for seating with a gesture, some snacks and drinks already prepared.
"Let's have a seat. Ready to go over the details?"

RULES
As the role responsible for navigation, along with information that is acquired, Shoma is expected to follow a few rules:
1. For now, keep your new designation a secret. This can be revisited at a later date. Should this designation be shared with anyone without prior authorization, consequences and termination of position are possible.
2. If you distribute any information acquired, it must be done anonymously or without referencing the source. This can be revisited at a later date.
3. As the Navigator, Shoma will be presented with two/three routes to take in order to reach the Eudora's next stop. Each route will come with a brief description, and Shoma may only choose one. No further details will be offered regarding the route until the following Monday, and each will have its own consequences to bear. If you choose not to act, then a choice will be made for you.
4. Additionally, Shoma may use this time to speak directly with Metis each week. They may ask questions, receive small hints, or simply chat with them, though any information received will be subject to Metis' own discretion.
5. Your findings will be given to you after your decision is made on Sunday, with results of the path chosen announced Monday morning with the new mingle post.

TALK TO METIS.
Even so, there's work to be done and they're here. What questions do you have? ]
no subject
but he does go to sit, the vibes tentative and uncertain as he peers at them cautiously. ]
...hey. [ good start. ] So...what's this about?
no subject
Navigation business, it is something I oversee atop everything else. [ They take a moment to bring up a screen to project from the table, showing the next planet's dossier. ] When you were all sent to us, a selection was made in consideration of a permanent crew candidate.
In this case, it would be you for the role of "Navigator."
no subject
Navigator. [ okay. he's just trying to review the dossier. ] But isn't the ship already on a course to the next planet?
no subject
[ That dossier stays open, even as Metis leans over to pluck it and shift it closer to Shoma, at an angle that's likey easier to read. With that screen moved, they press a button and another screen shows up. In what seems to be separated in three different columns, it looks for the most part the way forward but. ]
There are essentially three different paths we can take. The time to get there does not change between them, simply what's on the path itself. All bearing their own potential consequences.
no subject
So it's kind of a game of chance where the outcome's the same, but the route to get there might change other circumstances. [ okay. ] And...you're asking me to pick the path?
[ and because he's himself: ]
What're the consequences like?
no subject
That's right. The decision would fall onto you to pick.
[ A hum, moving to set up some snacks on a platter so he can set in front of Shoma. ]
I couldn't tell you what these ones in particular are, but from past experiences they can roam to about anything. One time it wouldn't stop blaring some "Carmen" songtrack all day.... [ There is a distant feel about them, like they're back on that day... or something. ] A-Anyways, these consequences won't be having a lasting effect, they should clear up relatively easily.
no subject
he makes a face at that though. no thank you, he is not an opera fan. ]
Do we know how long they last? They don't, like, range in severity, do they?
no subject
The range on severity can be possible, it wholly relies on whatever path is chosen. However, from my experience the worst of them usually take about two days to clear up. Otherwise, only a day under normal circumstances.
no subject
Right, okay. [ ... ] Can I ask a couple of questions about this before I actually make choices?
[ i promise mods i will pick before deadline. ]
no subject
Of course. That is why I'm here, Shoma.
[ smooches you're fine, boo ]
no subject
Thanks. [ sandwich. ] So why exactly were you given potential candidates? And also, why me?
no subject
I surmise it is the same reason as us. When we first began, we too were chosen to work under a Senior Crew. Eventually, they retired, and we took over. Not to say that we're retiring, there is still so much work for us. But the company has their reason for why they've chosen who they have, and if they get a permanent candidate out of it.. then all the better for them, I suppose.
[ They start to pour cups of tea, setting one near him and themselves. ] Of course you're free to reject that offer when the time comes, no one will force you to accept a position you do not desire. You can simply work with me during the time of this tour and return home just as everyone else at the end of it.
no subject
...am I allowed to say no to this current position? [ he doesn't have any reason to, now, but he's curious what the options are. ] Is this the same position you were basically job-shadowing, too?
no subject
You are. Just as we would not force you to work in our upcoming tasks in our tour, there is no reason why we should force you into this position either. It's an offer - whether you agree to it or not, that is ultimately your decision, Shoma. [ A nod. ] It is the very same.
no subject
I don't really have a reason to disagree right now. [ thoughtfully. ] I mean...besides the murder? [ yeah. yeah! ] Can we talk about that? Why is Nut & Bolt still going through with the tour now that this happened?
no subject
...Yes. We were.. very much not prepared for that to happen. At most, disagreements and fights break out from time to time through stress, but never one enacting violence of that level.
[ The next answer comes with a firm muddled disagreement with their own words, and a fainter frustration - as if trying to keep one's emotions in control. ] ...Because we're already contracted and have everything on board set to deliver.
no subject
but hum. ]
...that's about what I figured, yeah. [ he truly has said that it was likely the company wouldn't care and they were still under contract. ] But we don't know if it'll happen again, do we? It doesn't.... [ his own emotions are complicated suddenly.]
I don't think Scien was himself when this happened. I think...something else got to him.
no subject
[ Their tea... but yeah. Company cares for work and work only. ]
As far as I'm aware, I couldn't say. This is a first in my experience, but a lot has happened that I.. don't really remember having come up. I feel it's more possible than not at this rate.
[ They sit up straight at that, helm tilting. ] ..I did not personally know him, I never had the opportunity to get to. However, his behavior on the feed did not seem to be brought on just by these effects we go through during the week.
no subject
[ so he figures they can do whatever the hell they want. ]
Yeah. I remember you guys were saying the stuff like the thought and emotion sharing was new, too, and that's why I started to wonder if something went wrong with our nanites or the resonance going through the void. It's almost too easy for something to go wrong.
[ and here his mood dips a little. ]
...Scien and Dahut both were the only people on the junior crew who knew about my age and situation. [ a pause. well. mostly. mizuki nonwithstanding. ] They actually offered some decent advise and ideas for me to start doing my own research on stuff, so...I like to think that I knew them at least a little. It's why it felt so off, and if even you noticed something was a little amiss without really knowing him then that's a bigger problem. I guess it's also why I want to make sure whatever choice I make isn't about to trigger something else like that again by picking up something on a path or anything.
no subject
[ Always! Contracts! Relief to be told that hey it's fine, cause they're removing it! ...Not that it matters, cause they have a red hood on beneath it from part of their red uniform jacket, it looks like. Said hood covers most of their face so it really makes no difference - except they can sip at their tea. No early show and tell.
An obvious confusion shows in their connection. ] ..The nanites? The nanites in our system are very benign. Their purpose is the I.R.I.S, allow easy communication between one another even through languages, help aid in healing... but that is about it. While the thought and emotion sharing is new for us, we have experienced weekly effects before during our previous tours. It's how I explained it to Amalthea - that aspect is due to cosmic interference during travel.
[ They grow quiet as Shoma continues, taking another sip before they quietly set it down on the table. ]
If something is triggering, it should not have any correlation to these paths. After all, this is the first I've seen it and I've gone through this path choosing process many times before. [ A pause, realizing for that he only has their word to go on, so they continue. ] We did not choose a path in the previous week through our navigation process, this is the first of it in this tour, so whatever did trigger it must be due to something else.
no subject
he does, however, look a little annoyed by this. the nanites are pretty basic, but he's still hooked on a few questions. ]
...I know you mentioned that in the messages to me. About the cosmic interference. I'm just...how can you be so sure that those are the only features of the nanites?
[ and nanites aside. ]
Then if this happens again it's about finding the real trigger, and for now I should focus on the job. [ he seems to accept this. he will have many more questions but i'm forcing him to focus so we can pick on time. ] ...I'm guessing I should make a choice soon? If we're traveling and are on course to arrive tomorrow. Got any advice for picking a path? I've never been to space before or anything.
no subject
It's from my understanding of its technology. That and, well, having been with them for three months now with nothing coming out of the ordinary. [ A idle finger tap on the table, a light sigh. ] Which is only my word to go by. Though... I suppose if you're still uncertain about them, you can always run a diagnosis on the nanites once our Medbay opens up this coming week.
[ A nod in agreement at that mention. If it happens, look for the source. It's a good plan. ] That's right, we'll want to begin our trek through a pathway before 21:00 hours. It's pushing it, but that at least guarantees we'll arrive by morning.
As for advice... [ A contemplating hum. ] Sometimes, with risk comes reward. However, it's alright to try and settle with whatever sounds the easiest as well. Especially for the first time if you're still unsure.
no subject
[ ...argue about it later. this is not about that at the moment. but he sips his tea and thinks about the last part mostly. ]
I think I'm going to be unsure if the choice is always blind, but I don't disagree. Making things too easy feels like a trap, but taking the hardest path sounds like a deathwish when we don't know what's coming. And...am I going to be picking the path from now on for the rest of the tour?
no subject
It does cast a heavyweight when you think of it like that. I remember clearly how I spent numerous hours each time trying to choose the best path myself. [ Sometimes you overthink! ] But yes, it will fall upon you until the tour concludes. Of course, if you decide not to, a choice will still be made.
[ Can't just float aimlessly in space.. ]
Ah - before I forget, this position must be kept a secret from everyone else. For now, you can only discuss what happens here with me. Though, if we happen to gather any information through this process, you're free to share it anonymously if you wish.
