ROLE — SECURITY PATROL 🔦

SECURITY PATROL
welcome, crewmate shu.
Early in the day on TUESDAY, Shu will hear the familiar ping of the I.R.I.S. at his wrist; the moment that he lifts up his hand to check what the noise is for, a window immediately pops up. The projection fills in a spread of blue, and a message sent only to his designation loads in the window.
I have something of a job for you. Pick a location to set up an off-network camera, to catch anything in the area; if the system is going to pull a stunt on us again, we can certainly work smarter, not harder.

If it does, meet me in the morning after the lockdown ends. I've updated some of your credentials so you should be able to get up before anyone else. We can go get the camera, maybe squeeze in a second location before we have to lock down everything and everyone's awake.

ADRASTEA
Come FRIDAY, early in the morning, a message notification sounds again. It's loud enough that it rouses him from a very groggy sleep before anyone else. No one else even twitches at the sound or the blue light, and there's nobody in the halls the moment Shu steps outside, so might as well head to the location that pops up - right?

It indicates where Shu needs to go to meet Adrastea. The walk there is eerie, and lit only by the emergency lights of the ship - a sickly, golden orange in a strip that barely brightens the dark corners. The senior officer can be found easily there, spinning something almost absently around one finger, the other hand cupping their elbow. Once Shu is close enough, they stop spinning the item in their possession and instead toss it at him for him to catch.

It's a flashlight, one with a strap on the end. Huh. Pretty useful, considering the darkness that surrounds them.

Adrastea taps a flashlight of their own against their shoulder, something serious but enigmatic in their filtered voice as their helmet remains blank, only a faint, cool blue glow just barely visible from within. "Let's go."

RULES
As the role responsible for security patrols, along with the information that is acquired on patrol, Shu is expected to follow a few rules:

1. For now, keep your new designation a secret. Should this designation be shared with anyone without prior authorization, consequences and termination of position are possible. This can be revisited at a later date.
↳ As of w2, you can share your role with ONE non-role person.

2. You may use your knowledge during trial to guide, suggest, or prioritize investigations. If you otherwise distribute any information acquired, it must be done anonymously or without referencing the true source. This can be revisited at a later date.

3. Each week, Security Patrol can do the following:
📹 A. one location can be chosen on Tuesday; this location is where the role can place a video camera, completely separate from the Eudora's system, which is tamperproof and will remain hidden until retrieved.
↳ As of w3, you can place TWO cameras in separate locations.

🔎 B. a second location can be chosen Friday, with two chances to pick again if your choice doesn't get a hit; this is the location which can be investigated before the curfew lockdown is lifted and crime scenes are marked restricted areas prior to being locked down.
Currently, junior crew capsules require a valid explanation as to why you want to check or monitor them, and senior crew capsules are off limits. Anywhere else that has been unlocked on the Eudora is fair game.

4. While patrolling on Friday before lockdown lifts, 1 piece of evidence can be retrieved from the location that you visit. Choose wisely.
↳ As of w3, there is a chance to increase this to TWO pieces of evidence depending on the investigation.

☠️ If Security Patrol finds a dead body, this does not count towards the pieces of evidence that can be retrieved, regardless of whether it's physically located or found in their video log. Adrastea will ensure that the body is brought to trial first thing to give the crew a head start.

5. Once you have completed your patrol, you can choose whether to share the recording (if there is one) anonymously on the public network. If you share it privately, the source of it cannot be revealed at this time.

[ did hei specify the bartender is gojou and i just refused to read that with my own eyes for the past month???

and bless kazuki he’s a bean but he’s the angriest, most teen bean out there. ]

Thanks. Weird as it is, the less I have to do with these things during the week, the easier it is to pretend I don’t know what’s going on with them

[ he pulls that face again. he is shamed. ]

Yeah. Probably fair I put out the message as well, keep them out of the firing line too, if there are other people involved. My mess, my solution.

Someone’s handing out those items, aren’t they? The eight ball, the guitar. [ … ] I know I want to keep it secret, so I won’t pry. If they come to me though, I’ll keep their secret.

[ hmm. ] I was thinking of the library, maybe. Or one of the older locations where it could be quieter. I know Rodya, Gregor and Yuri were in the rec room, but I think it was only them that went there. I could swing going to the multiplex again, or something like that if the library’s not a great choice.

[ i hope lowe had to sit through some very heinanigans. ]

Yeah. If they'd been vague about it, or not had an upper height limit, we'd have been completely confused. Gives people an out, and the others something to remember so they don't veer totally off track.

[ he looks thoughtful, but shrugs. ] I'm not going to corner them or rat them out. I could take a guess at who's getting someone to give out items, but -- that's all.

James Bond? [ ... heh ] That seems like your kind of movie, although maybe the more recent ones where it's not horny half the time and has better action sequences. Quiet's good. The library might be more populated as it's a new place, and I'm not staying where I'm putting a camera this time. [ just. repeating that because christ. ] I'm not against the multiplex again.

‘Cause people who care too much about the series being their power fantasy kicked up a stink, I think? Shit like this has a real “a man’s work” cult attached to it.

I’m not sure I really have much of an opinion films. Teach used to love the old westerns — Calamity Jane, and stuff like that so I guess maybe those? She took us to see a couple of them back in the day.

[ i typed calamity jan. ]

That, or they just think "it's a man's role, a woman can't do it". Who knows. They won't change the gender because they'll be worried about making money off the film.

[ his teach.... ]

I dunno about that. She just really seemed to enjoy Westerns. Wouldn't go to a brick and mortar theatre, but we did drive ins a few times. It's very specific to America, Westerns. Based on when we had cowboys and gunslinging.

[ remind me to do a memshare before the week's up. when i am not oozing through the database floorboards. wheeeee. ] They're pretty big where I'm from. You need a licence for them, but-- anything can be forged if you can't get one the usual route. Didn't used to have those kinds of regulations back then, but the guns weren't as powerful as they are now.

[ he nods. ]

You know what a car is, right?

[ aye aye, will do. they start a movie and get a memshare instead. ] Elemental guns. [ … ] I guess that makes sense? We use gunpowder in some way, shape or form and you have to spark that to get it to fire.

[ so. pyro-core. ]

Yeah. They’ve been around a while where I’m from so there’s loads of types and sizes. You find a spot, park, and can watch from the back of the car, or in the seats at the front. You get people selling snacks, or you can bring your own. I think Teach always tried to bring something, like a bag of popcorn or pretzels, but we didn’t always have the chance to grab some.
