ROLE — SECURITY PATROL 🔦

SECURITY PATROL
welcome, crewmate shu.
Early in the day on TUESDAY, Shu will hear the familiar ping of the I.R.I.S. at his wrist; the moment that he lifts up his hand to check what the noise is for, a window immediately pops up. The projection fills in a spread of blue, and a message sent only to his designation loads in the window.
I have something of a job for you. Pick a location to set up an off-network camera, to catch anything in the area; if the system is going to pull a stunt on us again, we can certainly work smarter, not harder.

If it does, meet me in the morning after the lockdown ends. I've updated some of your credentials so you should be able to get up before anyone else. We can go get the camera, maybe squeeze in a second location before we have to lock down everything and everyone's awake.

ADRASTEA
Come FRIDAY, early in the morning, a message notification sounds again. It's loud enough that it rouses him from a very groggy sleep before anyone else. No one else even twitches at the sound or the blue light, and there's nobody in the halls the moment Shu steps outside, so might as well head to the location that pops up - right?

It indicates where Shu needs to go to meet Adrastea. The walk there is eerie, and lit only by the emergency lights of the ship - a sickly, golden orange in a strip that barely brightens the dark corners. The senior officer can be found easily there, spinning something almost absently around one finger, the other hand cupping their elbow. Once Shu is close enough, they stop spinning the item in their possession and instead toss it at him for him to catch.

It's a flashlight, one with a strap on the end. Huh. Pretty useful, considering the darkness that surrounds them.

Adrastea taps a flashlight of their own against their shoulder, something serious but enigmatic in their filtered voice as their helmet remains blank, only a faint, cool blue glow just barely visible from within. "Let's go."

RULES
As the role responsible for security patrols, along with the information that is acquired on patrol, Shu is expected to follow a few rules:

1. For now, keep your new designation a secret. Should this designation be shared with anyone without prior authorization, consequences and termination of position are possible. This can be revisited at a later date.
↳ As of w2, you can share your role with ONE non-role person.

2. You may use your knowledge during trial to guide, suggest, or prioritize investigations. If you otherwise distribute any information acquired, it must be done anonymously or without referencing the true source. This can be revisited at a later date.

3. Each week, Security Patrol can do the following:
📹 A. one location can be chosen on Tuesday; this location is where the role can place a video camera, completely separate from the Eudora's system, which is tamperproof and will remain hidden until retrieved.
↳ As of w3, you can place TWO cameras in separate locations.

🔎 B. a second location can be chosen Friday, with two chances to pick again if your choice doesn't get a hit; this is the location which can be investigated before the curfew lockdown is lifted and crime scenes are marked restricted areas prior to being locked down.
Currently, junior crew capsules require a valid explanation as to why you want to check or monitor them, and senior crew capsules are off limits. Anywhere else that has been unlocked on the Eudora is fair game.

4. While patrolling on Friday before lockdown lifts, 1 piece of evidence can be retrieved from the location that you visit. Choose wisely.
↳ As of w3, there is a chance to increase this to TWO pieces of evidence depending on the investigation.

☠️ If Security Patrol finds a dead body, this does not count towards the pieces of evidence that can be retrieved, regardless of whether it's physically located or found in their video log. Adrastea will ensure that the body is brought to trial first thing to give the crew a head start.

5. Once you have completed your patrol, you can choose whether to share the recording (if there is one) anonymously on the public network. If you share it privately, the source of it cannot be revealed at this time.

[ eventually, maybe. ]

For weapons, yeah. I just need to figure out whether I think narrowing down the suspect list like last week is more helpful, or whether seeing something happening in the moment is better. The footage we got from the camera was helpful but not for specifics like height or who it could be.

[ hmmm. ] If I was thinking of focusing on that, I’d maybe look at the multiplex as it’d be a comfortable location to rest in. Either way, I’d know who I didn’t need to focus on if a potential future killer didn’t appear on screen.

But you’d have to pick an exact spot in the lobby, one that would catch all that information. Maybe near the new area where they’re grouped together— for the laundry, lockers and combat room.

I think out of all the places, the multiplex would be the most logical. But I’d put money on someone falling asleep in the cafe, if I had money to bet.

[ oh.

he looks thoughtful. ]

… I probably won’t. [ the hilarity of getting mod permission to share and shu truly being like oh. no. ] There are people here I think might give good answers or suggestions, but I can’t say I’d one hundred per cent trust anyone here when there’s a chance any of us could end up killing someone.

So… if someone used the combat room and laundry, putting the camera in a place that could capture that would mean I’d be able to see if someone left one of the rooms? [ … ] Not sure if I’d know that was where they started though, that’s the only thing. The rooms we need to investigate aren’t a mystery.

[ he nods. they are so morbid and for what. ]

If I get targeted, I’ll make sure I go to wherever I put a camera. You’ll still have access to it, so take this as my recommendation to hand over any notes from the camera to — [ he thinks about it. ] Arthur, Yuri, Shoma or… I guess Throné. Can you do that anonymously?

It's something I'd be happier doing if we did have a second camera, yeah. If I put two cameras down and get nothing, that's luck of the draw. If I put the only one we have in the hall and get nothing, I'll just wonder what would've happened if I put it elsewhere. [ simple logic. ]

Oh, that's why you brought this up last week then. You were actually able to get the hardware you needed. [ ... ] What's Hyros like then? Less freezing?

[ he nods. but after a moment he gives her a thoughtful look: ]

I'm not planning on dying. But if it happens, it happens, so I can't make any promises. Better if there's a plan in place either way. [ ... ] It's pretty situational week to week, so I'm not sure making notes will help anyone else you involve. I can't say I know Temenos or Owner well, but they do give off the attitude that they'd get things done. I do know if you get Temenos involved, Throné will be involved too -- but there's risks there too, in general.

[ not specifically to the two of them. ]

[ ... ]

I'll assume it's just one for the forseeable future then. [ it's easier that way, than planning for a hypothetical that might not be possible. ] Talk about from one extreme to another though. The tundra to the desert.

[ haha no. ]

Mhmm. I think we're pretty locked down with a contingency either way. Speaking of, I did finally meet Europa yesterday. Interesting guy.

... Oh that sounds like a recipe for falling over constantly. How much more severe are we talking here? In need of technology to survive, severe?

[ yelan just dodging death talk like oh. no. not today. ]

I guess we were all pent up and wanted to let out the energy. He's a good fighter. [ lmao. well. he noticed... ] Is that why you were interested in know who's from the same worlds?

Oh good. So this is like a pre-cursor to the really fun gravity. [ yaaaay. ] Right, machinery and pressure tends to end poorly.

[ he tilts his head. ]

Did you not remember everything when you first got here, or is this — [ how to phrase it ] Something to do with when you’re both from rather than where?

[ … ] He seems kinda young for that, but— his profile does say he’s one of the oldest.

Woo hoo.

[ said so deadpan oh my god. ] At least it sounds like you've got ways around it.

... Huh. Would not have figured that. Is that why you knew so much about the people from the same place around here? [ she's in a similar situation. ]
