[ he laughs. and it hits you, shiro is finally here, finally with you as his whole self, your shiro, the one you fought tooth, nail, and claw for. (you saved me, keith.) the sentiment echoes inside of your skull keith as you ponder this shiro's existence, it does... it does seem odd, doesn't it?
especially with the top of shiro's head glitches, the line of his jaw. your brain blips. ganymede?
it blips back, a glitch that's as fast as the blink of an eye but it's there.
(it stays with you, it remains imprinted in your brain, even if it begins to sink underneath the waters, sink to the lapping of the cool waters also surrounding you.) shiro goes back to smiling, his flesh and blood jaw, the familiar wrinkle of the scar over his nose, the warmth of your camaraderie and your lives steeped in struggle and responsibility. held in his eyes just for you. only for you.
[ ya know. something about the water brings a sort of itch to his skin. almost a stinging of salt in the wound. speaking of which... wasn't he just nearly cleaved to death?? man. how hard did he hit his head... ]
I don't even remember hitting it...
[ that laugh. something that fills his stomach with butterflies and that smile. a smile that is like sunshine, breaking through the clouds and soothing even the worst of days. and a face. a face that has always been present in his life, except for when it faded from view... the sun snuffed out. gone. until he found it again.
"you saved me, keith."
"we saved each other."
he has to blink his eyes, a hand coming up to rub at his left. the sensation that he's rubbing more than just water in to his eye, it hurts. stings. salt and blood. but when he looks down, there's nothing there on his hand. no color.
what did he just see? there's a name on his lips, not audible, just wondering. ]
What're we doing here? [ he sits up. the water hurts. he tries to get himself up and can't, his hands slipping. body heavy. why does he feel so heavy.
[ the water is just water now. the water is sweet and clear. it's fine, and then the glitching settles. shiro's hair is white as snow again. there is no blood, there is no pain, there is just shiro and you and the water. ]
Yeah, take my hand.
[ shiro holds out that hand, his flesh and blood hand and offers it, spread fingers to you. he pulls you right out of the water so that you're standing so close, toe to toe, your hands clasped, palms flush. the smile he gives you is one that you haven't seen in ages, a weightless smile where the world has taken a back seat. atlas unburdened, his eternal shrug massaged back down so that his neck is straight, his head is high.
there's nothing around his jaw, no bridle, no muzzle, no awful metal contraption. his pulse thrums strong in his pulse under his skin.
he looks down at you, his brows meeting a little in the middle in that kind of goofy smile he gets. you know the one. his hand around your right hand is so tight. so so tight. like he doesn't want you to - ]
[ white as snow... keith can still remember when it changed. how he watched allura pull shiro's consciousness from the black lion and carefully place it into the clone body. it wasn't a guarantee and it nearly back fired. he nearly lost shiro again. again again again.
once and for all...
but he's here. he's real. and he's just as he remembers. before...
before what exactly? what was happening before this. wasn't there others...no. it's just him and shiro.
just the two of them.
he's standing now. body still unbearably heavy, but he's being supported by his strongest pillar. just as he always has been. unmoving, stable, a constant. always a constant. where would he be without him. dead, most likely.
keith's eyes go to their clasped hands first, eyes wide and blinking. it's like those romance movies lance is always watching. cheesy... he doesn't know how to process the closeness, but when he looks up and sees that smile. suddenly that uneasy melts away. it's goofy, just like shiro. he can't help but smile back.
the grip on his hand feels tighter, suddenly... reminding him of a time he held shiro's hand tightly. when they were dangling off the edge of the clone colony. left hand on his blade, trying to keep them from falling, and the right clutching to the dead weight of the clone. even after they fell, he never let go.
