It's as I said. I'm General Ashes - came in with the military to protect the general premesis of the planet. Not much trouble comes through here, but preventative measures are necessary in places of frequent export.
Since the whole affair began, years ago. We rotate in and out - so I've returned as of several weeks ago to pick up my post again.
Recent exports are primarily from the plant - cryo flash frozen meats, leathers, bone byproducts. Whatever you can get out of the cattle here, that's what's sold.
[at least five seconds have passed since the start of this conversation. charles is already running out of the will to be polite and formal about this and not just ask what he wants. oh no.
still, he nods and writes this down too...]
Everything going fine with the cattle? No issues there?
[ love you charles i'm sorry you picked the polite guy. ]
No issues that I'm aware of. Not really my purview. Exports have been going out quite regularly.
Of course you get problems with raiders now and then, but it's infrequent with the regular military patrols we do. Every now and then the prisoners do get rowdy, though.
Word of mouth 'round the town, I get told the local rag gossip from my soldiers. If I tried to originate the point myself, I'd be working through the night and then long past sun up.
Well, that's the son of the plant owner... kind of a skittish fellow. He's worked long nights in the prison usually to meet demands in the past... kind of keeps to himself.
And she's the daughter of a friend of mine. We were in the same military unit a long time ago, so she's like a niece to me.
[ a pause as general ashes gently adjusts the sleeves of his coat. ]
These reports are concerning... but I don't know much about them beyond the rumors I've heard. I don't even think these were filed when I was here. Looks like it was from shortly before I returned.
[ on his jacket, charles can see some spotlessly shiny medals. so shiny shiny... so clean... ]
I can see about asking my men for some follow-up. I think a few of them remained while I returned back to the base.

Just a few questions, on behalf of the Survey Corps. Do you have a moment?

That time of the season is it? Well then, go on.

How long have you worked here? What have recent exports been?

Usual prison rowdiness, or is there something in particular they're unhappy about?
no subject
Working night and day in a concrete block's not exactly my idea of a good time. So yeah. Usual.

It's a tough job, huh, friend? [he has given up on formality already.] Tell me about the raiders, though—however infrequent.

[ he rubs his ear a little bit with a yawn. ]
You just doing a general survey of the planet or you looking for something in particular, Corpsman?
no subject
HE ASKED SO IF HE DECIDES TO SHOOT CHARLES FOR THIS LET IT BE SAID CHARLES DID HIS BEST]
Both? A general survey, but there have been a few concerning rumours, I'll admit.
no subject
Rumors? What kind?

Apparently? ... Far as I know... no one's gone missing.
[ brow drawing just a bit. hm. ]
Got any reports or anything of that sort?
no subject
[shows him copies of the reports io provided]
no subject
... That is an official report...
But I'm almost certain [ pointing to the plant owner's son ] he left for another moon weeks ago.
... As for the girl, I believe her parents sent her off to boarding school similarly. Off planet.
[ he looks a little troubled, rubbing his ear again. ]

Do you recall who passed on that information?
no subject
This town's full of liars.
no subject
Makes sense. How much do you know about the missing persons, besides where they theoretically went?

... If you could, that would help. We'd like to know what happened to these people and return them to their families, if they truly are missing.
