Luke doesn't care about that, though. Right now, all he cares about is getting these people to safety; he eyes the stairwell, but if the doors aren't opening, then someone's going to have to deal with this. Since he's taken charge, shouldn't it be him?
He takes a deep breath, and runs forward, aiming to get through to the second floor as quickly as he can. Technically I rolled a 14 but then I realized you couldn't see it so you can pick that or the 8 I just rolled, whichever you desire.]
[I will average this out to an 11, so Luke bravely runs to the second floor. He can't escape the flames licking at him, giving him some degree of burns. His clothes are also a little on fire, so he might want to stop, drop, and roll when he reaches the second floor.
But hey, he's up there, and he'll see the fire extinguisher in a wall nearby, under a pane of glass that reads BREAK IN CASE OF EMERGENCY.]

No he will be smart and put himself out (not lewd) (for safety). It--well, it hurts, of course, but strangely enough, he doesn't falter, almost as if he's used to pain. Weird.

Unfortunately, perhaps the good news ends there. Luke did everything he could, but many of his colleagues still die at the hospital. (Was there anything he could've done? Was he fast enough? Why is he fine, when he was exposed to some of the worst of it?) This might be a familiar feeling, even if not quite the same, tugging at the recesses of his mind. Maybe he's only imagining it, haunted by his guilt.
With so many of his colleagues dead or also hospitalized, he doesn't have much in the way of visitors. (Others have parents and family to come and see them, and yet, it seems as though he has nothing like that.) But as he rests in his hospital bed, he does eventually receive a surprise visitor. He knows this woman, doesn't he? This is someone he loves, but has never been able to say so.]
[The ache that comes at such massive loss settles into his bones, a weight so strangely familiar that only with its return does he realize it was missing. With his wounds so comparatively mild (ish), and almost no one to call upon him, he has nothing but time--time to think about the ways he'd failed, the people he couldn't save. Lying awake, he can hear the devastated cries of the ones left behind; when he drifts off, he sees the faces of the dead. There's no escape, but he wouldn't take it even if there was one.
It goes on like this until the door does open, finally--and he doesn't even need to see her face, really. There's something about the click of her heels, the rhythm of her steps, that stirs his heart even through the haze of his amnesia.]

[It's true; he doesn't want to get rid of her, really, but it makes his skin crawl for her to see him like this, even if his injuries aren't as bad as the others'. (That, too, is a terrible feeling, but he's definitely not going to tell her that.)]

It bothers him, that hole in his mind, but he doesn't want to get caught up in it while she's here, so he gives her a bright, reassuring smile.] You don't have to worry. They said I should be good to go pretty soon.
... All right, if you say so. Give me a call when you're out, okay? We should grab a coffee or something. It feels like I don't get to see you enough, these days.

...Maybe it doesn't matter why. Because the truth is that he's weak--that he knows what he should do, but the mere sight of her is enough to make him falter. Maybe it's silly to be angry at himself for wanting to keep a promise instead of breaking it, but he can't help it.]
[Eventually, he's discharged from the hospital. With that said, he's not completely cured of the effects from the gas—at times, his body will feel weaker, or he'll have trouble breathing. He's told there's a chance it'll get worse as time goes on. That, in the worst case scenario, a flare-up will kill him.
Not exactly pleasant news, but what can he do but persevere?
He returns home to his apartment suite, which he shares with two roommates, Margaret and Anise. Who, for the record, also probably came to visit you in the hospital at some point. I'm not assigning them asshole roomies. Anyway, it's not the best of places, with a shitty landlord, but they make do. Maybe one day they can afford to get out of here and be somewhere better. (Though with your newfound health condition, you worry that that dream will have to be pushed further to the side...)

Dahut wanders over into new territory, and it's new territory because the landscape is instead one familiar to Luke (not that Luke knows this).
From Dahut's perspective, he sees Luke, a somewhat shadowy (i.e. dead) figure like him, though Luke is covered in burns and cuts, pieces of shrapnel going through him in what were likely his fatal injuries.
As Dahut approaches, pieces of images, memories, emotions flood his mind. The illusion Luke's trapped in, not unlike how Dahut was just moments ago; all of his regrets and guilt. This is a man who has always tried so hard to be a hero, and yet he's weighed down by his failures—the people he could not save, those he could not help like his Eudora crew members, the people who died when he survived. That he's conflicted over never telling his childhood friend that he loves her, at the same time that he regrets returning to her life, knowing he'll only cause her heartbreak.
Intuitively, Dahut will see and understand everything that happens to Luke in this illusion, including from here on out, and feel the things Luke does. He will also get the sense that if he tries, perhaps he can influence the illusion or that, at the very least, Luke can hear his voice if he calls out to him.]
[It's not great, but Luke comes to terms with this quickly enough, because he has to. Medicine and science have their limits, after all--and he's always, always hidden his troubles behind a smile, lest he cause trouble for those around him. This is a little more dire, but in the end, he just needs to act the same way he always has.
He didn't like getting visited by Margaret or Anise, either, but he faked his way through those, too, easy as anything. He does the same now--and it helps that, for whatever reason, his pain tolerance is a little ridiculous.
