None of these soldiers are his friends, per se—he's only recently joined and hasn't gotten the chance to know anyone well, besides Hermann and, to an extent, Ichiban. Still, Soldier A gives him a wave in greeting, while Soldier B ignores him entirely, focusing on cleaning his sword.
Gregor will get the sense that he can > Inquire them, which is a fancy way of saying that if you choose to Inquire an NPC, you may get info. It could be useful, it could be random. Who knows. Simply let the Powers That Be know.
All in all, he has a few options:
> Inquire > Do whatever he wants around the barracks > Go to the mess hall to get something to eat > Some other random action you can think of]
[Gregor exchanges greetings with Soldier A, who is doing okay today. It's another day, can't complain. Somehow, in the process, Gregor will learn the following:

A young man, born and raised in Riven. There've been whispers of a worsening situation between Riven and the neighbouring country, Edoras, which worries him—but as a low-ranking soldier, he's not privy to the more political side of matters. He only hopes it doesn't escalate to a war between these two military powers.
Soldier B looks like he doesn't want to talk to Gregor, but he's not rude enough to shun him if Gregor's making an attempt to say hi. Gregor will learn the following:
Soldier B:
A middle-aged man, who migrated to Riven from another country. Unlike Gregor, his country has no involvement with Riven, meaning that his enlistment was completely voluntary, rather than a lack of other options. Being a foreigner, he faces some prejudice, but he respects King Riven for being willing to recruit and promote anyone, whether it be foreigners or commoners. He wants to rise in the ranks, and resents Gregor to an extent for already being chummy with high-ranking soldiers like Hermann and Ichiban.
Soldier A speaks.]
... Well, there's probably going to be another fight, sooner or later—it's what keeps us employed, after all. I just hope it isn't with anyone too strong.
Ah, you and me both. Not really up to us who it ends up being, though, you know...? Might as well just make sure we're in good shape to face whatever happens to come.
[that's the best they can do at their level, after all. sure, the political moves others make will affect them more than most, but it's not like that matters to anybody above them...]

And we'll be fine as long we've got Captain Ichiban. His Majesty knew what he was doing, appointing him as captain—there's no one I'd rather take orders from. He looks out for us.

[Eventually, somewhere in this military base as described by someone who knows nothing about medieval armies, Gregor will find a familiar woman. Though of course she'd be familiar—this is Hermann, who's been looking out for him since he joined the Riven army.]
[Hermann stares at him, something about her as imposing as always.]

[Ichiban's friendly with everyone, really, but he does seem to have taken a shine to Gregor. Maybe it's out of pity for Gregor's status, the leftovers of a conquered country trying to find his place here, but whatever it is, he's done his best to make Gregor feel welcome and like one of them. He and Yuri haven't met—not much of a reason to take Yuri to the barracks, or Ichiban to their home—but she's always enjoyed hearing Gregor's stories about the man, who seems larger than life at times.]
I have a task for you. It's nothing serious, so don't worry.

Soldier, Sinclair
A soldier under Hermann's direct command. Like Gregor, he's the remnant of a country conquered by Riven who joined up with the army as a means of staying afloat. Skittish, but surprisingly terrifying in combat.
Gregor might have some fondness towards him—birds of a feather stay together, after all. Sinclair nods at Gregor in acknowledgment, before heading to Hermann to speak about some business.
Gregor can spend the day doing [mumbles] military stuff, but as his troop isn't set out to depart for battle soon, he does have some free time. Maybe he can go back home to Yuri for a bit?]
[sinclair, buddy. he gets a nod in return, but he lets sinclair go about his business with the vice-captain, heading on to his (mumbles) military things. you know. normal stuff he does all the time.
if he's got the free time for it, then... of course he wants to go to see yuri. she worries, he knows; besides, it'd be best to take it easy for the time being. he's gotten everything done for the day, no need to strain himself if there's the potential for new engagements on the horizon. it'd just be silly to get injured ahead of it because he pushed too hard.]
[Yuri is surprised to see Gregor, but pleasantly so. She prepares dinner for the both of them, making a hearty soup, and chats with him over dinner about her day. Sometimes, when Gregor can't always visit home, it might feel as though there isn't enough time to talk with her like this, but that might make these moments even more important.
Adjusting to a new country isn't easy; like Gregor, Yuri's still finding her footing in Riven, after they lost their home. Still, she's made friends at her job, such as her coworkers Shoma and Rodya, the latter of whom walks her home when it's late enough to be dangerous. The neighbour, Dante, also looks out for her. All in all, she's doing okay.
It's something resembling peace, for both her and Gregor. (Perhaps that's something Gregor has longed for, even if he may not quite recall the beginning of it all.)]
[he sits with her for dinner, listening to her talk, telling her about his own day in turn-- these moments really are important for him, honestly.
despite the work he's taken on, despite being someone who's much more skilled now in combat than pretty much anything else he could've done to support them... well, being a soldier is exactly what gives them this kind of momentary peace. he tries not to think about it not lasting forever; it lasts for now, which is the important part. she's safe, and even if he goes off to fight again, she should still be safe here. she's got more people than just gregor looking out for her.
he really should do something for them all, sometime... maybe for her birthday, he always tries to save up for that.]
