They're not meant to. At least that's what our knowledge was before. But I know for a fact, now - through a haze - that I got my eyes from a mission-caused injury. So if I'd had that ghost of a memory before we even touched down on that planet, I would've made sure we were better prepared.
We're slowly regaining parts of our awareness that weren't within our reach, before. It's not much, but it's certainly something, and it helps us to know that there's something for us to reach. Whether it's an answer, or an enemy... time will tell.
