I'd almost prefer it to have been flowers again. I don't think that it was actual flesh. I think it was fungi that had a flesh-like quality to it. But the uncertainty isn't particularly comforting.
It is, yes. I wasn't close to her, so I couldn't way what her mindset really was normally, but from what I remember of her she certainly wouldn't mindlessly do that sort of thing. Not unless she thought it was something else, or wasn't in her right mind. Or, perhaps, both.
